I played the video at 0.25x speed and it is very easy to see him moving long before the sound of the gun. He was halfway out of the blocks when the gun fired.
I don't think this is something that can be protested. I'm sure there were several officials with recall pistols; how they all missed it is beyond me.
I agree. I watched it multiple times at .25. I watched for the smoke, rather than listen to the gun, and he didn't go before the gun fired. He went before the sound reached the camera's microphone.
One thing to note: We're used to seeing sprinters at world championship events that have ReacTime sensors. This prevents sprinters from anticipating the gun and will DQ them if the computer determines their reaction time was too fast. At the high school level, obviously, there are no ReacTime sensors and athletes can anticipate the gun. This guy got lucky and timed it perfectly.

How do runners not understand that the sound from the gun reaches a spectator in the stands after the start of the race? Don’t listen for the sound. Look for the smoke.

You’re reaching. Lol. The kid jumped. If he were white you’d be calling for his head.
If you wanted to see horrendous officiating at the WA 1A state championship you should have been at the Triple Jump. The official calling fouls there missed at least four obvious foot fouls varying from about 2" to 6". It was the same official that a couple of years ago was trying to measure javelin throws from the pull mark until every coach there protested got it clarified for him.
