I’ve run 4:35/9:48 and have never broken 2:10 in the 800. And not for lack of trying as I’ve run 2 800s crash this year and multiple 4x800s as the second race of the day. My 400 time is 58-59 probably.
just wanted to point that out.

You said you were incorrect. Does that mean you actually ran 1:59?

i think 2:20 is good enough to break 5:00, but 2:15 is quite a bit safer. for high school runners, there is going to be quite a range. something like 2:10 to 2:20. then there are the more sprinting based 800 guys who need to be really fast before breaking 5:00 because it is just not part of their training or focus.
would love to see a distribution of what 800 speeds people reached before going sub 5.
I looked at pur team PR sheet from track this year. We had 9 guy between 4:54 and 5:02. Their 800 PRs ranged from 2:01 to 2:17.

What is DRG? Don’t rape giraffes?
DRG = Distance Running Gurus
Yeah, you and thousands of other runners. Try googling “Slowtwitch”, and maybe you can find a support group.
