My HS XC season lasts from about june 1 (beginning of summer training) to around november 10 for the state meet, and may last longer depending on NXN and championship meets. I would say I am an experienced runner however this year I want to train somewhat distant from my coachs training plan. I have prs of 1:54, 4:10, and 9:02, but this XC season I really want to win state and make it to NXN. How should I organize my base and peaking phase? Our coach never really explained it to us and had us running 10 mpw the whole month before state (I did not run very well). He would also have us doing workouts one day and 1k elevation gain hill runs the next day 2 times a week and I felt like I had no recovery. For how many weeks should I be doing pure mileage and no workouts? Should I be doing tempos and stuff in the beginning phases? how many weeks in should I start doing threshold? VO2 max? Speed work? (Races start late august early september) How many weeks before state should I start lowering mileage? Should I do vo2 max work in the early phases of base? or purely tempos/progression/threshold?
