I go off mileage my coach goes off time… what do you guys think? This is for high school xc.

Going by time on runs can help pacing. If you know you're going to do five miles you might push the pace to get it over with, whereas if you're doing 40 minutes you might feel more inclined to go at an easy pace
Go by steps instead
Honestly the best thing todo is time on all Easy runs. Forget the pace.
For workouts work in miles 1/2 1/4
time is the much better metric especially for summer base building
Time is good.
You'll know how long you'll be running and it will keep you from racing your mileage when you feel good.
Be consistent, listen to your coach.
I've been going by time since coming back from injuries, and it has helped me stay away from unnecessary accumulation of unplanned extras "oh I'll just do half a mile more" etc.
75 mins is 75 mins
