In general, splitting miles has a minimal effect on your aerobic development. Yes, it allows you to increase your mileage yet it amplifies your chances of injury from fatigue. Additionally, running all your mileage at once builds your mental toughness as the longer you go, the tougher it gets mentally. However, if your aim is to maximise recovery, it would make sense to consider that splitting a 80 minute run into two sessions of 40 minutes each, one in the morning and one in the evening, might facilitate better overall recovery for your body.
Thanks Ezza.
I'm an older guy (54) on yet another come back. I feel like I'm doing this one smarter than some of the others, though, with controlling my weight situation (lost a fair amount of weight) before I did any significant running AND my approach has been to run easy in the build up. I've built up my mileage for the past 12 weeks. Last week was 69, this week will be mid 70's. I enjoy running longer and am looking to maximize the benefits of high mileage with a continued upward build for the next 8 weeks or so. I have a goal race in December and expect that I'll start adding in real quality towards early August.
I was a collegiate runner a long time ago and have been inconsistent in my training over the last 30+ years. I've dealt with injuries, of course, but to my recollection none have really been the overuse type of injuries. Most have been the result of being to aggressive with workouts/races for the fitness I had at the time. Most recently I strained my hamstring 14 months ago attempting a track speed session.
Thanks again!
The pros double, and the frequency of running is itself a stimulus. But at your age (and I do not mean this in a disrespectful way at all), 100 mpw is going to put you so far ahead of similar-age competition that I don't think you should worry about the singles/doubles distinction. The best 100 mpw is the 100 mpw you will actually do.
Check out threads on Mark Nenow's training. That could be great for you, especially if you tend to overdo it on the track.
Good point! :)
I'll check out those Mark Nenow threads. Thanks!
So, I've written a plan to increase my mileage utilizing some 2 a days.
Thanks for the input.
