Give it a try. I found myself doing lots of doubles, lots of 2-4 mile runs with drills and strides, on 35-45mpw training for the 800m. Running twice a day kept me feeling fresher and healthier.
Inevitably someone will come in and tell you it's only worth doing doubles if you already run 1,000 miles per week.
Eh, depends on age/goals/mileage/competitiveness. Some short doubles are fine on low mileage & can help you get better. So can building up the mileage a little more in singles and then adding in doubles when you need more mileage. I think once you get over 60-70 in singles then you start thinking about doubling. You can do it before then but I wouldn't always recommend it for a younger runner. Plenty of time to develop and do other things to see some gains.
I don’t know about that. If he did a reasonably long run on Sunday, he would be spitting about 4 miles the other days. A minimum of 70 mpw makes more sense.
You arent doing doubles to increase mileage, you are doing them to add a 2nd stressor to your day.

Long runs are for professionals. There is no such thing as a "reasonably long run" for novices.
I am trying to up my mileage over summer and I am wondering weather to do doubles towards the end or not. Thanks
It's a dumb idea. You shouldn't need to double on 35-40 miles per week. If you have time to double you probably have time to do 45-50 mpw. It's just another 8-10 minutes per day.

At what level of weekly mileage did you begin running doubles? I know you’re from back east, and it seems like going out the door, before sunrise and during freezing weather, to just run a couple of miles wouldn’t seem to be worth it.

Yes try two days a week. I used to run to gym do weights and run home for early workout, then second easy run later in afternoon. You can also split single longer run into two shorter sessions.

IMO it is not advisable to do doubles with such mileage...in practice, as long as you are in the 75-80 minutes per day of average running, it's much more practical (given that the average person has a job, a family, etc. and not only time to run) to do it in single runs.

Why do you think this?
Not speaking for Malmo. But a "reasonably" long run just is not important and not good when doing 35 - 40 mpw. Better to add quality and volume throughout the week than - for example - doing 5 x 4 miles Mo - Fr and run 15 - 20 miles on Sunday.
A very good 40 mile week with doubles could look like this:
Mo: 3/3
Tu: 3/3
We: 3/3
Th: 3/3
Fr: 3/3
Sat: 3/3
Su: 4.
This looks too easy? Great! Then do this and add on slowly more miles and more structured fast running. You will get fitter.
