What are the slowest 400/800 abilities you've ever seen for a sub 4 miler? Anyone have any idea what the absolute slowest one can be is? Just thinking about this for fun lol. I think it's probably around 52/400 and maybe 1:55/800, and assumes you have unfathomably good natural aerobic endurance as well as aerobic training.
sub-23 from the blocks is generally going to be about 50.5 in the 400, but with the flying-200 you're saving about .75 - 1.0 second versus from the blocks.
so a sub-23 flying-200 is more like a 23.75 - 24.00 200 out of the blocks, which in turn correlates to about a 52.xx 400 which in my opinion is bare-minimum for a sub-4
if you're truly interested in whether or not you have the basic speed needed to go sub-4, a better test is one's flying-200 time
sub-23 in the flying-200 is right around the bare minimum speed needed
Sub-23 is all some world class 800 runners can do (see nick symmonds).
I’m sure there are sub4 runners out there who are barely sub-26.
Nick Symmonds ran a 400 (from the blocks, not a relay) in 47.45 a month before the 2012 Olympic 800 where he set his lifetime best of 1:42.95
in a flying-200, Nick was almost surely in shape to go sub-21 that day he ran 47.45
*folks keep in mind a flying-200 is not from the blocks, it's not meant to test starting-strength/acceleration so much as one's actual basic speed
anyone who really thinks there are sub-4 runners out there that can barely break 26 in a flying-200 simply do not understand physiology and/or math very well
