Hello everyone, I'm a 16 yr old, just finishing my sophomore year of HS. I've been running for about 9 months at this point, I joined an XC team last season and went from a 26 min 5K in August to a 21 min in November. Since then I've been training consistently. I have had to write a paper on the science of running for school, and I've kind of gone off the deep end of learning about this stuff. I wanted to get some tips on how to train from the smart folks here.
I unfortunately was not able to do track this year, the local team wasn't able to find a coach, so I can't give you any track times. I regularly do 400 reps in the upper 1:30s range, on trails. So I definitely think I could get a low 60s time with a bit of training for it. My most recent good 5K was 21:03 in November 2023. I did a 5K back in March but it was a crazy lactate spiking course and I got 25:01 (for some context on that race, my friend who typically gets high 17:00s in the 5K did that race and got a time of 23 mins. It's hard to overstate how crazy that course was.) Since then, my vo2 max (as measured by my watch) has jumped and I'm definitely feeling stronger.
SO I have 2 questions: what do you think my 5K time could be right now? and how should I train to prepare for the upcoming XC season? I'm thinking aerobic work but I'm new to this so I want some advice. Thanks
