4 decades ago, when I was coaching track in Minnesota, many coaches were tiring of one or two athletes bringing home the "team" trophy for their school, so the coaches association tried a separate meet, scoring every track event from top to bottom, like a cross country meet. All of a sudden getting something like 4th and 8th in an event was big points, and if you could have two solid results through 20 events, you could be the State True Team champ. It really caught on and with every single athlete being ultra important, it's a truly an emotional and joyous event. Where else can a 10th place long jumper, and a 14th place miler, be the true heroes of a state champion team, because they had a PR on the big day! ( 8 Section Champs and 4 "wild card" teams make up the state meet entries. The large school division scoring would go from 36 points for first down to 1 for last with their three athletes per event, and the two smaller divisions, with just two athletes per event, is 24 for for first and 1 for last. Relays are scored higher.) Coaches who don't like to recruit athletes and actually coach, don't like it much, but most kids and coaches cherish the event. ( I have made a few softball coaches a bit angry over the years as I convinced a 1st base girl or two, to switch to being a discus thrower, helping us to a state championship!) Swimming now also has a True Team Championship in Minnesota.
