Does anyone have tips on transitioning back into cross country as a 400 runner? And what types of runs should I be doing? More long runs? Strategies for the 5k race itself? Anything helps

Summer is all about building base so just run 3-8 miles 5-7 times a week.
Maybe more if you're really interested, try to run with the team because it's more fun, if you feel like it add some fartlek style stuff in.
should I buy a running watch?

Why? Going to time your runs? No point in the summer. Just get the miles in.
If you are going to some track intervals, a regular watch with a stopwatch function should do.
he's saying don't bother with the watch because the summer stuff is basically just get in relatively slow mileage as a fitness base for the fall. as in show up for XC practice having run some this summer where you're in a little shape and your body is used to miles. if you've only been doing sprint work, start low and slowly build. no dramatic jumps in mileage. save the intense stuff and obsessing about pacing for fall school practices.
