Gilbert senior Vance Nilsson stands alone in history.
Nilsson ran 34.83 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles to set the national high school record in the event at the AIA State High School Track & Field Championships on Saturday. It’s the first time ever in the United States that a high school athlete has gone under 35 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles.
I heard that this record had been broken on one of the conference championship broadcasts, but it took until now to see it on this supposed track website. The 300m hurdles in high school is not discussed much but there have been a lot of very talented kids to run the distance, and 34.83 is an incredible time. To put it in perspective without equating the two performances in any way, even though the hurdles are 36" for the pros as well, given the difficulties of that last 100m, 34.5 for 300m is 46 flat for 400m, just over the incredible world record time of 45.93. Of course, Karsten Warholm's 300m H wr is faster, 33.26, but Vance Nilsson's 34.83 is 6th all-time!
Warholm's 300m H record is not comparable to US HS 300m hurdles. The 300H that Warholm ran had the hurdles placed in the normal 400m hurdle positions whereas the US HS 300m hurdles have different positions on the track. The spacing is the same but they are not placed in the same place on the track. I think that he had fewer hurdles to clear than what a US HS runner would have to clear (7 vs. 8 maybe?) because they just used the normal 400m hurdle positions.

At the May 4th Howard Wood Dakota Relays (Sioux Falls, SD), Reagan O'Neill, from Bennett County SD (a Class A school) came into the all-class 300m High School Girls (30") Hurdles with a time of 44.85. She was leading until she stumbled a bit over the third to last hurdle, but still ran 45.14 while taking 2nd place. She is a SEVENTH GRADER. Sigh. I never ran in a track meet until I got to High School.
The high school 300m Hurdles are a bit weird as there are eight hurdles and the final hurdle is placed right before the finish line. Lots of last second crashes with this set up.
Masters Men Long Hurdles run:
25-49 400m 36"
50-59 400m 33"
60-69 300m (7 hurdles) 30"
70-79 300m (7 hurdles) 27"
80+ 200m (5 hurdles) 27"
The hurdles are placed on the "normal" 400mH marks. As you can see the race length and hurdle height drops as the age-group gets older. When you turn 90, I'm told they just paint a white line across the track. If you step on it you get DQ'ed.
