I hope this gets him in festival of miles and brooks pr. stupid brooks pr though inviting 4:06 guys in the early season when 27 went under 8:50 at Arcadia. I was expecting more low 4:0s but Tommy was a pleasant surprise for me
Not to speak bad about a high school kid but Tommy Latham is an example of how the sport has changed for the worst. A 4:10 guy back in the day is a 4:01 guy now, so Tommy’s times are nothing compared to any of the runners from our childhood. Time trialing in a state meet means nothing. I am excited to see him get humbled come outdoor nationals similar to what happened at Nike Indoor (9:19) and Arcadia (20th)

Humbled?? Are you joking? He ran 8:46 and 4:01 as a junior. He was 15th at nxn so he can also run cross. The only other junior who ran 1600/mile faster this year was Owen Powell

Love how you list his time at Nike indoor but his place at Arcadia in what was probably the most competitive high school race as of yet. Latham is going to do big things. You know who else ran 8:46 as a junior and had some solid altitude mile times? Jojo Jourdon. I could say Latham being that good if not better next year.

He won his state meet and I presume set a meet record, that’s a hell of an achievement for any runner

The kid ran 4:01 by himself in 80 degree temps at noon. He did this after running 9:15 to win the 3200 at 8 PM the night before. Tommy is legit.

Generally temperatures aren’t a big deal for shorter distances. did he have a pacer or did he just run it by himself?

It's a high school state meet. How would someone have a pacer? If a team qualified 2 people, why would they waste a man instead of trying to score more points?
There was no pacer. Tommy’s teammates got 2nd 4:13 and 7th 4:19. You can only enter 3 runners per event. Tommy was out in front by 50m by the first 400

He now has the all-time GA state records in the 1600/mile and 3200/2 MI [ included the Imperial distances meaning that no past conversions are as good as his 1600 and 3200 times]. He has raced sparingly this winter and spring meaning he could certainly have more in the tank. Rested and in the right race he might have a good shot to break 4:00 this spring even in the mile [ his state record in the 3200 at Arcadia also came the day after running the 4x1600].
I believe he is entered in the mile race this Saturday in GA which is kind of a pseudo / unofficial Georgia HS Allstate mile Invitational. If he's going for another fast time I think he will have to go solo again. But will likely be fully rested this time.
