Hello!
Just searching for some advice. F, 34. (half PR is 1:28, but have been building back from injury, so most recent is 1:32)
My first marathon was 2 years ago and I ran in 3:17 (1:38/1:39). I ran my second on Sunday in Copenhagen, completely bombed the last 12K after hitting half way in around 1:37 to finish in 3:19 (so roughly 1:37/1:42). I had to take a couple of short walk breaks. I was just mentally broken. I don't know if it was dehydration? I don't think it was nutrition as I took more gels than my first marathon, and thought I had it sorted.
I put a lot into the build from February - peak mileage was 65 mpw, and I averaged roughly 60 mpw. Midweek 10 mile tempos at 7:15 min/mile pace, and similar quality in long runs every other week.
I was training for London marathon last year but got a tibial stress fracture in April, so was basically not running over 40 mpw until December 2023. I wonder whether it was too much to try and build back to marathon in less than a year?
Any ideas how to re-focus? I had such a miserable time and I'm so disappointed in how it went. My time should qualify me for London, Chicago and probably Boston if I wanted, but I don't know if I can go through it all again for a day that could just go badly.
