Disqualified winner is also alleging that it was the second place finisher, now “winner,” who reported him for receiving aid outside the official stations. Classy.
Anyone who can run a 2:24 marathon should know the rules about accepting aid. On the other hand, if you are 2nd place in a no prize money race, narc-ing on another runner for getting a bottle of water during the race is petty.
It's stupid but that's the rule. This one is actually a justified rule. A couple of things, someone had a bike out there with him. Also he's getting aid from someplace that isn't an aid station.
I agree that if you can run 2:24 you can't play dumb on this one.
The disqualified runner was alleging that the people helping at the aid stations had no water ready, and they were "scrambling around". If he was all alone in front, there were probably hundreds of water cups waiting for anyone to take them.

If that's the case, I fully support the dq'ed runner. Drives me nuts that aid stations so often don't have their sh$t together.

So the guy that ran 2:25 and was second across the finish line got water but he didn't?
Interesting video in this article of him receiving the aid. Seems a bit more planned than him letting on and seems like the race had footage from a pace bike or something like that. Might be just throwing the second place guy under the bus since it would have been clear to the pace bikes who would (should) have known the rules - sounds like might be sour grapes that he got caught kind of thing.
If you run at this level you should have some elite treatment and get your bottles from a separate table. Getting bottles outside these stations is simply not allowed if you want the time to matter. For most hobby runners it is not relevant. You can even run with non WA approved shoes.

When I originally saw the headline I figured it was someone handing him carb drinks because the race was small enough it didn't have tables for elite athletes. Obviously that's still against the rules but more reasonable. Sounds like they did have tables for the elite athletes and he was in the field.
First of all do you really need extra water besides every (I'm assuming) 5k of the elite tables? Also, why the hell did he have someone biking with him in the first place? That alone should have warranted DQ. Dude deserved it for being a moran.
I don't think he meant harm, but he's young-ish and learned a good lesson for the next go. Second place was only 17 seconds behind. Watch the original story with clips from what I assume to be the race's lead bike, which shows the DQed guy passing by volunteers who are perfectly organized and holding out water cups but grabbing bottles, gels from his dad who rides alongside him on a bike. (On multiple points of the course.) This wasn't some spontaneous grabbing of water because the tables weren't ready. Wish the guy the best on the next one, and hope he practices carrying fuel if he needs it.

It has prize money at least for course record. My wife got $500 for 3rd a while back
1. He received substantial aid from his dad cycling along him, which could have altered the outcome of the race, with the second place so close behind him.
2. At his level, I doubt he really didn't know the rule, but rather thought the race was too small and unimportant to be serious about the rule.
3. The race official shouldn't have told him he was outed by a competitor. He was quite blatant in the violation, and the race should have proactively DQed him.

If it's true that the aid stations were up and running, it's really lame for the guy that got DQ'ed to lie about the aid stations. Does anyone accept accountability anymore?
If the aid stations were disorganized, then the bike handoffs gave him an even bigger advantage over second. It was only his second marathon, so it is possible he didn't know, but it's a valuable lesson and fortunately not an expensive one since there was no prize money
I didn't see a thread on this yet so here is the article I on found on Google News this morning. From the Daily Pilot:http://www.dailypilot.com/sports/tn-dpt-me-0507-oc-marathon-20140506,0,2483379.story"...Mohamed Fadil, 32, o...

Wrong. If that's the case, having the bike support gave him an even bigger advantage, definitely enough to make the difference when this was a close race
