ND & BYU load up every single year. Besides Jerry's Oregon men's squad, I can't think of two more underperforming programs given the talent pool they have.

BYU on that list? Wut?
Or do you mean besides 3 team championships in the last five years, Mantz, Clinger, Rooks, Young, Wayment, Orton, Camp, etc.?
BYU largely does a nice job with their recruits. Won't rehash the whole mission/age debate here but in my opinion a lot of their variance is attributable to how much their guys are capable of (or interested in) dedicating to training after 2 years away. I think it is understated how many of them return with different body compositions or perspectives on life
ND is fine, lots of young talent on the squad right now with maybe the best incoming class I've ever seen about to join them. As a key training element, they - as well as the Tennessee Vols under former ND coach Carlson - love to hammer long runs. When programs recruit as well as these two, they have the capacity to throw people in the deep end and see who can swim. They are guaranteed both attrition and results
How does this class stack up to others, is there a signature guy or 2? On the women's side, it's clearly Englehardt. Would it be the surprise of the century if young Powell didn't go to UW?

Agreed. I’d add Stanford as well. Those 3 combined seem to get half of the top recruits yet they barely progress. Nuguse as an exception as he wasn’t a top recruit

When has ND recruited this good? Stanford has always have top recruits not too sure about ND other than 2024's class.

Just a small rehash. On mission, anyone else can also do a mission. Organize it with your church leaders and volunteer for 2 years in a third world country. With most denominations and programs, you will even be allowed to run after your work day, and you don't have to be together 24 hours with your mission partner.
The reason Mormons do missions is because they are organized by their church and an important part of their religious training and commitment, not to improve at running. Of
The real reason BYU is always good, is many Mormons from the Southwest are good runners. For these runners BYU would be the top choice for them and their parents for academics anyway. This results in a self selecting pool of runners, who will come to BYU even without a scholarship.
