After getting Rutgers transfer Alex Carlson, the NAU women have no excuses on winning NCAA cross nationals this upcoming fall of 2024. They have the best roster by far and a great coach, need to get it done

Well, XC has not been her strongest event so far...but maybe Smith can change that

I don't think it's certain. They're losing at least 3 of their top 7 (Larkin Reiss Grice) and possibly more depending on who takes the covid 5th year (Congdon, Upshaw Smee, Stearns)
So they were super top heavy on their scoring this season even though they did have 1-2 freshman like Stustman or Moore who could have contributed.
If they lose all of their current top 7 from XC, I don't think they are completely favored. But if they only lose their 3 seniors, then they are for sure the favorite.

I think it will be really interesting across all teams to see who takes the 5th Covid year. The class of 2020 now all have the choice to stay for 2024/2025 xc/indoor and use that eligibility.
That said this NAU team is going to be deeeeep. With the freshman that now have a year of training under Smith at altitude and the transfers as well as his build from the ground up athletes that have been quietly putting in the work for the last 3-4 years. Should be an exciting season.

Besides NAU, if AL gets one more E African....or OR W run like their track times suggest there are some strong teams out there.
way too many good teams to make this call, plus the transfer portal will go nuts after outdoor season. expect lots more movement between now and next fall. even a fully loaded NAU squad is a pick'em with NC State and BYU.

Oregon is way ahead of both those teams and NCSt is in rebuild.

NAU wasn’t making excuses. They and Smith gave credit to NCSt and made no excuses. Where are you coming from saying that?

According to this TSR article from June 2023, Grice was thought to have 2 years of XC and Indoor eligibility upon transferring to NAU from UNM. I have no idea how to make sense of her eligibility in the NCAA after her university experience at Birmingham in England, but maybe someone else has a clue.
The Stride Report has learned that numerous women from the University of New Mexico have entered the transfer portal. Those women are Amelia Mazza-Downie, Elise Thorner, Gracelyn Larkin, Maisie Grice and Aliandrea Upshaw. TSR...

Smith plus altitude.
It seems to be an accepted fact on LR that living and training at altitude is a huge advantage, but at last year’s NCAA XC championships, 7 of the top 10 in the men’s race were from schools near sea level and all ten in the women’s race.

Living and training is a huge advantage, however, that doesn't mean it's the only factor.

A group of 20 runners should even out the other factors, but in any case, it’s not a huge advantage. Blanks, who trains in Boston, actually won the NCAA’s and then ran 13:03, indoors. I really doubt Blanks would obtain a huge improvement he had been running for NAU or that Young would be slower if he attended a school at sea level.

Have you ever coached or been a part of a national championship team? Do you know how hard it is to get it done? You can have the best roster ever and still things will or can go wrong. Saying a team has no excuse is a bit much.

It’s reaalllyyy about none of the key runners suffering injuries or being sick at race time.
