Im on my desktop right now, but I saw it all over my instagram feed, he edged out his teemate colin abrams who ran sub 1:50 indoors btw. I think quincy has some great talent, although I agree with comments on the fact he is probably better at the 400. given hes ran 21 flat in the 200 indoors as well, one could assume his 100 might not be half bad if he has a good start!
David Rudisha's 400 meters personal best is 45.50 and we all know his 800m world record is under 1:41. I think this is a very slow 800m time, relative to Quincy's best 400 m.
If this is real, I am am amped! This is the kind of talent we need in the 800m if we want to see the event return to its former glory.
Do you have links or video?
The kids basically the fastest ever for his age at 400m and you want him to be an 800 guy?
he seems similarly talented as Obea Moore who ran 45.1x/1:49 as a sophomore. Hopefully he pans out unlike Obea
I want everyone who is that good to be an 800 guy because without this kind of talent in the 800, we'll never really know how fast humanity can really get...
There are so many humans who can run WAAAAY faster than 50 seconds in the 400m but no human has ever existed who could run two of those back to back.
Sub-1:40 is like the white whale of track and field. It is like the sub-4 minute mile of the next generation... Can it be done? Will it ever be done? Some say no. I'd like to see it happen.
he runs 45.7. He should be able to run 1:50 in practice.
would you lose your minds in a similar way if a 1:45 guy ran a 4:10 mile?
The difference is partly physiological and partly psychological.
Physiology - a lot of really good (1:45) 800 guys can run the 1500, so we would not be impressed buy a 4:10. But it is much, much less common for 400m runners (who usually think they are sprinters) to jump up and run a middle-distance event. The powerful body-types often found in sprinters don't tend to do well in longer endurance events where moving muscle mass around the track is a disadvantage. So if you find someone who can do both, that is rare and awesome.
Psychological - the 800 is hellish and agonizing in ways that other races aren't. Something is "worse" about running an all-out 800. You can taste blood in your lungs. It is a sprint, but it is too long for the body to hold a sprint. So you have to be psychologically ready for that. Most sprinters don't have any love for that kind of suffering. So if you find one who does, someone tough enough (mentally) to be an 800 guy, that is a rare gem.

And he's less physically mature than Moore was at that age. This kid looks like a 16 year old and is still growing. He is going to be Sydney/Knighton level good by the time he is a senior.

Also, I've seen a few interviews with him and he seems really grounded. After his 45.1x to start outdoors, he was talking about how they took a break after indoor nationals, and he wasn't sure about the US Oly Trials .. just that he'd talk with his coach about upcoming events.
Definitely a fan. Hope he keeps progressing - seems like a great kid and a lot of promise.
Watching the race, looks like Quincy still had more in the tank. Even split with a solid kick and was the only guy who didn’t immediately double over at the finish. Could definitely go sub 1:50, maybe significantly so if he focused on the distance more. Though as others have said, 45.19 is another zip code so 400 is probably his sweet spot.
Also, random observation but he has the exact same form as Nijel Amos
