She was warming up on the local HS track where I was volunteering. I didn't know who she was at that time, and she didn't look like a HS runner. She looked like a collegiate or pro runner (even back then). I told her, "ma'am, if you are looking to do a workout, this track is being used for a HS meet but we have another track not far from here at the middle school." She just replied, "But I in this meet."
It literally made no sense (in my mind) for a person like her to be running against kids. She was sooo good and looked like a different kind of athlete...
Ella realized she was going nowhere with her training in her first two pro seasons.
Per an interview from one of the recent indoor meets, Ella confirmed she has upped her mileage as well as changed her focus to the 5000.
Sure has paid off, with 8:46/3k and 15:06/5k prs, and now this fantastic 2k leg.
Good era to be a Stanford distance fan, given O'keefe winning the Oly marathon trials with (Tonn) McLean 4th and (Bei) Hall 5th, Fisher a heavy favorite for the 10k/5k Trials double, Cranny a favorite and now Donaghu a dark horse for the 5k Trials, Robinson a good chance to make the Aussie team in the 5k, and W&W having a punchers chance to make the 800 Trials final.
US first leg runner, some no name guy was 8th as well.
He didnt fade from 3rd to 8th. He actually fared well i thought, those were tough EA dudes he was up against.
Kasey Knevelbaard - ran 3:34.55 and 13:15 last year. For a guy with those recent PRs, I don’t think he ran particularly well. He was 18 seconds behind the leaders in a 6-6.5 minute race, 15 seconds behind Elzan Bibic (3:34.20/7:37/13:24 PBs) and was beaten by other “no names” from Uganda, France and South Africa. But you’re right, he didn’t drag the team backwards after starting well ahead of 8th place like Izzo did. Izzo couldn’t defend a 100m head start over the anchors from Uganda and France. She split 29 seconds slower than the anchors from Uganda and Kenya. I can understand not giving up your spot on a U.S. team in an individual event you managed to qualify for, in spite of an injury setback, but a relay? Naw.

Donaghu is in the running for breakout star of the year. 14:58 and they way she did it with a 63.8 last lap. Got to be in the conversation at least for Paris.

Cringe!! I have a similar story. Worked lifts at Snowmass one winter in the 80's and that day was working with a old timer who was a pro level skier in the 50's & 60s. This dude is screaming down the hill, approaching the chute. (I was about ready to say something like control your speed...) As he entered the chute he said 'Hi xxx", xxx says "Hi Stein!" ...
