Well 5k is 13 minutes of running so hardly anything. shouldnt be too fatigued for the 10k as long as your preperation the 2 or 3 days before was good and you recover properly the 2 or 3 days after.
Get both of the NCAA first-round marks out of the way in one day so he doesn't have to think about NCAA stuff again until the end of May. Allows him to travel to Aus for the trials, maybe chase the Oly standard in the 5k somewhere, whatever, AND then recover from all of that without having NCAA stuff looming over him.
While it's certainly a hard day I wouldn't say it's hard enough to be of significant risk if training around it is managed correctly. ~30s off top 5k ability is kinda hard, but ~60s+ off top 10k ability is no more than a hard tempo workout. It's like a 15:00 5k guy running 15:30 in the morning and then coming back for a ~32:20 10k in the evening.
ok makes sense but just haven't come across another athlete doing something similar.
With todays shoes maybe easier to recover from. Correct didn't think about Aussie trials which the 5k is on April 14th. 10k trials was run back in December.
The travel to Australia in the prime part of the season for NCAA first-round mark chasing creates a unique constraint on the season that makes the double here make sense.
Even if the double is unconventional the top guys running well off their best ability just to qualify to first-rounds has always been common. I remember almost 10 years ago watching Ches and Jenkins tempo a 10k in flats at this meet to get their marks.

Both Sam Bush 1500/5000 and Amaris Tynnismaa 1500/10000 did something similar at Raleigh Relays today.

Anyone care to explain to someone who does not understand college/NCAA sports at all?
I assume Ky running these events now qualifies him for an event later on?

For NCAA outdoor track, there are two regions: west and east. The top 48 times from each region qualify for the regional meet. The top 12 finishers in each regional meet qualify for the NCAA Championship meet. For Ky, running fast enough to get a top 48 time in the west region is pretty much a jog (sub-29 should be fast enough) but he did have to put up the time. As others have said, I'm sure that's why he ran the relatively easy double yesterday. The qualifying times are now checked off the list and he can focus on other stuff.
