They do this in highschool meets too sometimes. Basically several runners are seeded into each lane in the waterfall. Not sure why there's only 5 of them though

I once ran a 800 (oversized indoor) where we had 7 people in the heat: 4 inner waterfall, 3 outer.
I bet this was a boring as f**k race to watch
When they installed the track, they used the specs from Franklin Field.
They're starting in lanes 3-4-5 because that's where they're standing before the gun goes off. If they moved a few lanes to their left they'd be in lanes 1-2-3, and a few lanes to their right they'd be in lanes 5-6-7. Hope that helps!
