"The 18-year-old suffered “traumatic injuries” to his face and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the sheriff's office said."
So, he basically fled for his life.
Perhaps he knew that what was happening to his brother or perhaps he didn't. But he probably understood that the beast was too lethal to combat on his own so he likely determined that getting help was his and his brother's best hope.
Do you expect him to step back into it's jaws after he just escaped being mauled? Is that wise?
The younger brother is probably very lucky to be alive, and it is hard to find any fault with his actions, imo.

There are precautions that can be taken to reduce the risk of these kinds of outcomes. Bear Spray is one and I have bought some and bring it along, and it comes with a holster worn on the outside of your coat or jacket for quick retrieval should you need it,

Sure, while your back is turned you will pull out your weapon and slay the beast that is in stealth mode and about to strike you from behind. The teeth will latch on to your neck. Your weapon will remain untouched.
These boys were antler hunting. It seems they decided to cut antlers of a dead deer. A dead dear that the mountain lion killed and was staying close to while it protected its kill. These two most certainly had knives with them ... did them no good.

Where does it say anything about a dead deer? Do you know something from another article?
They were shed hunting. I'm sure you city folks don't know what that means but it doesn't have anything to do with a dead deer.

That would be awesome if so.
We got the thing before then, and it would be great if the new iPhone had comparable capabilities to the Garmin, but at the time we got it, there were no devices that worked off of cell phone technology that would cover remote areas. The Garmin device also requires a monthly subscription service charge.
I'll have to look into that....
