Could he do it during the collegiate season? If a race is set-up for him and he focuses more on the 15 the next few months? What did his 3:57 mile in the dome convert to? 3:48? That’s like 3:31ish?

No no no no.
Nico has shown he is a 26:52 runner but he has no more speed than Galen, who could not come close to sub 3:30.
3:57 mile in the dome converting to 3:48! What choo talkin bout Willis?!
Should Nico go run a 2:07 ‘thon to unlock the third spot for Lenny?
I'm not reading the thread. Let me answer this question for you simply - NO.
Like what they say with the SAT, go with your gut instinct without thinking about it.
He's not fast enough for that. 3:30 is like a 3:46 mile.
I generally agree with this take.
However, even if he has no more speed than Galen had, I wouldn't be surprised to see him run 3:33 or 3:49 today's races. Would it shock us if Nico could stick with Adam Fogg for a mile?
I don't think Nico will become a global medal threat in the 1500, but I think he could probably run a 1500/mile time that would turn a lot of heads.
Whether he actually does it is another question. He has opened the door to plenty of meaningful racing at the 5000 and 10000 meter distance on the world level, and I don't know how much he'll focus on shorter stuff.
Just a little perspective... K. Bekele's personal best in the 1500m is 3:32. He didn't have supershoes though. Even with spershoes. I just don't see Nico breaking 3:30. He's a 10k guy.
Nico will probably run 3:32hi-3:35low in month from now
My impression (from following this wonderful sport for 25 years) is that the gap from 3:33 to 3:30 is about 5x the functional gap from 3:36 to 3:33, especially pre-2020. Now in the last few years guys running and/or making the jump to low 3:30s has happened and happened in a seemingly more linear fashion, but that wasnt always the case.
3:32-3:34 is pretty common for world class 10k guys and Nico is probably right in that range. He ran 3:37 almost 2 years ago.
Sub-3:30 is never going to happen. Completely different level.
Perspective.
When Grant Fisher tightened the screws last night at the end he had no problem separating from Young.
One month ago when Josh Kerr was racing Fisher in the two mile, Kerr not only did he separate from Fisher, he dusted him like he was Noah Lyles racing Ryan Crouser.
Neither Fisher nor Young are dropping sub 3:30s.
If he could, he would have won last night.

I think if Mo could run 3:28 without super shoes, it’s not crazy that one of the best 5k/10k runners could 3:29.9 with super shoes
He is better suited for the mile than the 1500. Yes the 109m and resulting conversion helps him. 3:48 for the mile seems possible, just as 3:32 in the 1500 does. Sneaking under 3:48 or 3:32? Maybe. But sub-3:30 is too fast from what we've seen.
Uh, no it doesn’t.
Sub-3:30 is not going to happen without him converting to miler training, and then it is still unlikely. However, you have to distinguish between a competitive miler and a time trial style mile/1500m for a 5000m runner. The latter can run very fast at mile or 1500m without having anything like the acceleration that milers need to compete in fast or slow races. Nico can build up to a very fast pace and hold it a long time. He can close a 3k or 5k in 1:54 but he is not closing any race in 25 like top milers. 3:57 converts to 3:48 at sea level, so I think that you are going to see him running something close to that equivalent. 3:48 flat converts to 3:31.1 by the 1.08 factor. Given some rest and sharpening, he might actually run 3:30 this year drafting off of a Jakob special on a fast track, given that he led that 3:57 race on a flat track at 7,000 ft.
Saying that he can't because Bekele (a marathon world record holder) couldn't doesn't mean much... Bekele had the 10k world record too... but like another said - Mo Farah ran 3:28 2 years after his 5K and 10K pb... I doubt Mo Farah switched from 5K/10K work to 1500m work to set his 1500m pb 1 year after his second double-double at the olympics...
Sub 3:30 is fast, but not out of the picture for someone with a 3:57 mile at altitude. I say he could get to sub 3:30 without a ton of 1500m work... maybe if he focused on the 5K instead of the 10K... He has the #3 5K time so far this year, and the #2 10K time... so do we really know what he is yet (5K or a 10K guy)?

All a 5/10 guy can do is to improve fitness. Pretending to be a 1500/5000m guy, won’t make him any faster. Farah wasn’t training like a miler when he ran 3:28.
If N Young grew up in England or the surrounding islands, played soccer as a midfielder from age 3, joined a youth track & field club by age 12. A 200m to 400m sprinter as a young teenager then transitioned to a 400m & 800m athlete in his later teens. He chose the easier path to Olympic team: pleasant (5 to 15) mile runs in suburbs and rural settings. So no sub-3:30 1500m.
