Has everyone forgot? P Valby is a fragile former swimmer. Even if her twitch ratio, running form and other measurables tell us P Valby should be a good 10000m runner. Don't forget, she can't run often. The torque on her left foot to left hip on the track for 25 laps isn't worth the injury risk. I know P Valby doesn't have classic sub-4:05 1500m speed for 5000m, but 5000m needs to be her longest track event.

If rested, she could probably go 14:50 behind pace lights.
I would think so, considering she just ran a 14:52 Indoors, after racing a hard mile the night before, and maybe saving something for a 3000m the following day.
I was there for that women's marathon in 1984. But I didn't stay for the entirety because it wasn't my focus of the day. I forget what event I left for. Maybe swimming or diving.
I was there for the entirety of the men's marathon. I remember everyone near the starting line was touting de Castella, especially two guys standing next to me who were seemingly in awe of him. I took one look and thought no chance. There's no similarity to all the athletes I've watched the past 2 weeks.
I didn't know much about the winner. But late that night after Closing Ceremony I was eating at a McDonald's not far away on South Figueroa Street, just before making the drive home to Las Vegas. The place was packed and it was almost exclusively Hispanic customers. Next thing I know there was a huge commotion, followed by sustained applause. There he was, standing near the counter and absolutely beaming upon his new celebrity status, the winner of the marathon. One day earlier I might have thought he was an employee.
