Cole, Yared and Hobbs (plus add an unexpected fast outlier) will not allow the semis, let alone the finals, to be anything other than a world class burnup to guarantee their fitness sees them through.
Of course we hope the youth all get to Paris. Absolutely no guarantee though. Prelims, semis and finals are never easy and there is more talent than ever.
Centro is by far the best tactician, perhaps ever in the 1500, and as long as he thinks he can do it and shows up a the start line, he shouldn't be disregarded. Guaranteed he's not ripping 50 second bell lap ever again but perhaps 53s which may be good enough in tactical races.
At this point in his career, Centro would be lucky to place top 3 at NCAAs let alone the Olympic Trials. I'm not even sure he takes Nico Young in a tactical 1500 right now
Centro has not performed well in 3 years, his times have been very weak and he hasn’t been competitive at the national level at all. It’s not like we are saying he is terrible because we have a short memory- he was once a great, world class miler. He’s been done for years. He knows it and is simply running since he is getting paid. Nothing wrong with that but he will retire soon
Of all the “old dudes” in the event right now, Centro is probably at the top in terms of likeliness to sneak on the team, in my mind. That being said, this will be an incredibly hard team to make and I figure even most of the young guys who are “long shots” have a better chance than Centro. Hope I’m wrong, but just what I think.

So we all are talking about Hobbs, Hocker and the Silly Guse, but no talk about Centro.
I would not count him out at this point. He’s keeping his powder dry and slowly building while the others are already running near peak times.

Centro doesnt make the final
You sure? Cole and Hobbs let that happen at indoors
I appreciate Centro for his role in winning me multiple beer bets in Daegu (beating Ciaran o'lionard who had the exact same PB at the time and USA 800+ medals over Irish finalists in any event), and the guy was just a tactical genius the likes of which I have only seen rivaled by nick willis in my track watching lifetime.
That being said In a TT he was dead meat (as his record shows) and if he raced either 10 years before (with el G having finals paced) or 10 years later (with the front running era we have now) he would have been a nobody on the global stage. He is the ultimate case of the perfect athlete at the perfect time.
Now it you could pair Centro's tactical brain and health with his teammate Andy wheating talent level, you have someone with multiple global golds and a no doubt American GOAT (a title cntro might hold anyway).
I would go as far to say that Centro does not even make the final at trials for the mile. He isn't great anymore like he used to be, let's call it like it is

This is a massive overrating of Wheating. He had the one race in Monaco where it all came together, and even that was slower than Centro’s PR.
Talented, yes, but not at the level that you think. Lots of athletes come over from other sports (swimming, soccer, skiing, climbing in Kessler’s case) and if anything they develop faster than “pure” runners.

I think we all agree that he won't be running the mile at the Trials.

Doesn’t seem like Normal Guy pays much attention to the sport.
