From Feb. 27 to Mar. 2, the swimming and diving team competed in Morgantown, West Virginia, at the last of the Big 12 Championships before Texas moves to the SEC. The Longhorns made a memorable exit, sweeping their final meet...
Texas men’s swim and dive won 19 out of 22 events that comprised the Big 12 Championship meet, sweeping the five-day competition with a total of 1,979 points, more than 500 points ahead of the second place team. This title is its 28th consecutive win in the Big 12, bringing its total conference championship streak to 45. All of these titles were won under the coachmanship of Eddie Reese.
Apparently he lost in year 1 and has won every year since. That's AMAZING.
What other coach in any NCAA sport has a better streak than that?
Thank you for calling attention to this! Eddie Reese is generally regarded as the greatest coach in Swimming history. More impressive than his conference titles though, is his national championships. He has won them in every decade since the 1980s, I believe. The big 12 is a very weak conference, and his swimmers could win it if they all had COVID. NCAA Champs, though, is one of the fastest meats in the world.
and by all accounts, Eddie Reese is a very good man who takes good care of his swimmers. You’ll hardly find a better example of the gentleman Coach.
Knowing both Al Carius and Eddie Reese, I saw strong similarities in both their personal approach to their athletes and their training strategies. As far as streaks, swim coach Jim Steen at Kenyon College won the men's D3 NCAAs for 30.consecutive years.
My old swim coach, Richard Quick, who was at UT before Reese, did even better. 7 NCAA champs at Stanford, 5 at Univ. Of Texas and was coach for 5 Olympic teams.
Must be a weak conference as far as swimming in concerned.
Kind of funny - I looked at last year's NCAA champs to prove you wrong but yo were correct - Big 12 teams - UT finished 2nd, Aggies at 25 out of top 40 schools - and they both leaving for SEC next year.

These are all phenomenal accomplishments - through a driven and gifted coach. I applaud them all.
John McDonnell once told me his greatest accomplishment as a head coach was winning 35 consecutive conference cross country titles. This from a man that won 42 D1 National Championships. I was proud to be a contributor on numbers 4, 5, 6 and 7 of those conference cross country titles. Let's just say #4 was a bit tight with 2 seniors and 5 true freshmen on that team.
