Bryce has looked in excellent form the past few races. The WC race was silly. He's a good tactician, but everyone ran like an absolute moron except him. He spent way too much time in lane 2 and still handily won it. I think he'll be back in 1:43 shape come outdoors, barring injury. I think if Arop stays healthy, it'll be down to Hoppel and him. A Kenyan or Algerian might get themselves into the mix but I just don't see it happening.
Yes, just ignore the best in the world last year (Wanyonyi) in favor of the North Americans. Arop has proved himself (beating Hoppel easily at 1km recently). But it was a weak 800m field at World's - how many of these guys will even be in the Olympic final?
Can someone tell me why none of these guys ran world indoors? They want to go to the African Games? Does their police contract give them a bonus if they win that or something? I just don't get it.
I was pretty much joking, and riffing off the bad news for Grant Fisher cliche here every time someone new runs ~12:50. Ultimately, Algeria and Kenya are going to send loaded teams. Last year, Kinyamal's spot got sniped by Ferguson Rotich. This year it feels unlikely anyone in over 1:44 fitness will have a chance for the win. To @Rojo's point it seems that yes the KDF, police etc. do pay the bills and want these athletes at domestic/continental events. Also the winner here did run indoors, and was just mediocre in his races. Kenyans just don't seem comfortable racing indoors. The 1500m winner also struggled in all his indoor races, but looked really good beating Abel Kipsang and others in a tactical race:
We probably just take it for granted that almost all North American and European athletes grow up going to indoor races, and the Ethiopians start sending them in their teens to get them reps.

I suppose there is a small chance they are looking at the big picture, and after all they are Africans so maybe the African Games mean more to them than World Indoors, where some relatively mediocre athletes are getting medals.

I would guess you spend a fair amount of time wondering about this. I actually root for the Kenyans because I know it makes you unhappy when they succeed.

Indoor sucks what’s there to get? 800m on a 200m track is awful. Not to mention flights, hotels, etc.

World Indoors is completely irrelevant in Kenya and in most African countries.
And I bet its also irrelevant in Asian countries where the Asian games carry far more weight.
Indoor track looks contrived and fake to most non Europeans and non Americans. Its like watching WWE to them.
