Wonder how much the shoes have to do with it. Or perhaps it's the food we're eating. Many animals also are fed steroids (which transfer to the meat we consume).
It's not the shoes. Boys high school times were trending faster many years before super shoes. The larger volume of sub-9 guys (pre-super shoes) and sub-4 guys is now having an impact, especially at 3k.
Well, yeah - cheat shoe BS put an end to that. Might as well just free up anything and everything at this point because, what’s the point? Tech race nowadays.
Since when? The 90s? Yep they gradually got better over a 20-year period but have pretty much been the same from 2010-19. That all changed with clown-shoe tech. If the shoes don’t work - stop spending money on them.
We feel NAU's Drew Bosley. Bosley, who ran the NCAA record in the 3000 last year at 7:36.42, didn't make NCAAs this year despite running 7:43.98 for 3000 (which ranked him 17th) and 13:29.26 for 5000 (#21).
Was Justyn Knight one of the fastest guys in the world? It wouldn't be shocking if the current fastest 3k and 5k guys in the NCAA made global finals in the 5k this year at the olympics. Let's acknowledge that there are some absolute studs in the NCAA right now. A decade ago no one doing well at the olympics was in the NCAA or their first year out. Now tons of guys at the front of the world ranks are from the NCAA the past five years. Also the average age of the top NCAA athletes is older now than it was in 2018 due to covid years and higher rates of red-shirts.
I have been coaching high school boys for 22 years. I have the guys do their workouts in trainers. The guys who do the workouts that my 9:25 guys used to do now run 9:15. The guys who do the workouts that my 9:45 guys used to do now run 9:30. The shoes make a huge difference.
His point was that Bosley is the record holder and a stud. But, even running the times he did that would usually be amongst the top in the country, he was not fast enough to qualify for the meet.

Ya, Wil Smith from Gongaza is a monster. 7:44.97 (ranked 20th). Faster than Knight.
Although he will not be running the 3000m at NCAA (did not qualify). Expect him to be an Olympic finalist in Paris (like Knight was).

What are you talking about? He just said Knight was 9th at Worlds that year. Yes, he was one of the fastest guys in the world.
10ish years ago:
2011 - Centro, bronze @ Worlds 1500m while in college (+ O'Lionaird in the final)
2012 - Levins, made Oly 5k final right after college
2016 - Murphy 800m bronze, Chelimo 5k silver (had been out for maybe a couple years)
These current NCAA guys are studs. Nico might just make US history in his career.

What's Justyn Knight running these days? He should be faster since he shouldn't have peaked at age 22. Is he running a lot faster than 7:44 now?
The fastest guys in the world are only around 7:25-7:30, just like a decade ago. Yet a decade ago the fastest NCAA guys were only 7:45-7:50. So the top NCAA guys used to be 20 seconds slower than the fastest in the world, now they're only 10 seconds slower. To me that means the NCAA runners are faster than ever right now, compared to the top guys in the world. Same with the 1500. The world lead the past few years has been 3:27-3:28 just like normal. Top NCAA guys used to be around 3:40, over 10 seconds slower than the fastest in the world. Now we've got NCAA guys within 5 seconds of the world lead.

That was not true in the data sets that I looked. I wrote a longer post about this last year. Using athletic.net, I looked at the 25th best time (to avoid outliers) in the 800,1600 and 3200 in California HS. In the 8 years prior to COVID, it was basically stagnant. The last 2 years have been faster than anything before, and getting faster. And participation numbers last year were finally reaching pre-covid levels, so it wasn't a matter of population in the sample.

I've been coaching since 2009. The generation of kids just believe in themselves more and go after it more in races. If your guys were running 10-15 seconds off the same workouts that many years ago, that was a mental toughness or mindset issue on their part back then. The shoes are a placebo. Believing that they are capable of 9:30, 9:15, 9:00 or faster is worth so much more than footwear.
