Due to a number of reasons my training has been sporadic for 7-8 years. I ran a reasonable marathon as I turned 40, off of light training, but am now closer to 50 with minimal racing in the last few years.
I see myself as a marathoner, and want to race well over that distance, but it would be nice to run some reasonable races over 10km-HM along the way.
Points of note:
Typically a higher mileage guy.
Can train 6 days a week - plenty of flexibility in there to double on 5 with a single on Saturday and Sunday off.
Typical pains for my age - some knee stiffness/pain on one side, stiff back, etc.
Traditionally seem to have done better with more of a focus on LT work than getting too specific, but open to a more specific block if that's the way to do.
I am managing a chronic inflammatory condition so figuring running to principles rather than a fixed schedule is the way to go.
There has been a noticeable lack of flexibility and explosive power over the last few years so I figure weights and gym work should figure heavily.
So with all of that in mind, how would you structure my training - a periodised or complex approach (and why).
If periodised what does each phase look like from both a running and complimentary exercise perspective, etc.
