They were in the slow heat. Any runner could jump in that heat; you didn’t even need a qualifying time. That’s why 53 runners were entered in the slow heat (a couple dozen of them didn’t start the race). Another 20 or so runners were seeded in the fast heat.
So the Florida runners didn’t take anyone’s place.
They paced her for the first 1,000 meters. I found it interesting that they said it was to slow her down so she didn’t go out too fast. She really picked it up over the last 2,000 meters once they dropped out.
I watched the ACC 3,000 race earlier and two teams had pacers in there, with one of them from NC State taking the field through 2,000 meters.
So this isn’t isolated to the SEC meet.
