I don't understand why you would lie about when it happened.
"concerned about their friend who had not come back from a morning run at the intramural fields."
Literally the second sentence of the article says she went for a morning run. Might have been dark out. How on earth did you get "murdered in middle of day"?
Note from LRC: The title initially said the murder happened "in the middle of the day" which we have removed as a result of this post.
Where I live I go running any time of day or night without fear.
When women I know have to express their fear it makes me so mad. Everyone has the right to run anywhere they want at any time of day or night. No one has the right to assault them.
I’ve run in this area many times. I have family and friends in Athens and this area is my go-to for runs due to trails and familiarity. I am so sad about this tragedy.
The welfare check call was made around noon, so it sounds like an early morning run. Be safe and run in groups.
You can't run on a Track unless you are part of that schools Track Team. That is why High School and College Tracks are closed to the Public at all times, not just during school hours, They do not want anyone else on the Track anymore for some reason, High School Tracks used to be open 24-7 up until about 5 years ago, not anymore.

I know that's just logical but I'm mad.

I don't know where you're from but every high school (and the one college) track are open to the public. One of them has lights and people can go anytime they want.
High School tracks are public property- we have people walking on ours during the school day and on weekends.
The only time they "can't" be there is when a team is actually practicing on the track.
Understand that state to state laws are different. I was told that in Georgia the public wasn't allowed on high school tracks. But then, that's Georgia.
In 2022, of known perpetrators, there were about 15,000 male and 2,000 female committing murder (5k unknown).
For the same year, there were over 14,000 male murder victims and over 4,000 women victims.
So, the overwhelming majority of murderers are men and a smaller but still overwhelming majority of murder victims are men, which is why stories of a woman murdered are covered so much more often.
The body of a woman found dead Thursday on the University of Georgia camus has been identified as 22-year-old Laken Hope Riley, the Athens-Clarke County coroner told CNN on Friday.

They are closed to the Public in Orange County, Ca I live in Huntington Beach and they were always open until about 10 years ago when they got all weather Tracks.

Many scary, mentally ill guys out there. I think it is safer for female runners to run on a treadmill rather than to run in the dark alone in secluded areas. Or, run in a group or in the light of day. Very tragic news to hear of her murder/death.

Huh? Tons of schools still keep their tracks open.
You would think murder wouldn't happen in the light of day, but a few years back there were two women runners killed in the span of a few days— one in Queens, NY and one in the middle of the country, maybe Iowa. The Queens one happened at like 1–3pm and the Iowa one in the morning, but not super early.
It made me feel better about running at night. Being light out doesn't make things safer. It's more about the number of people around you. I think at night maybe it's safer to just not be seen at all. I watch out for cars but don't wear anything reflective or neon or even wear my hair in a ponytail swinging around. I just try to blend in with the night.

^live in socal. MOST high school and college tracks are closed to the public, you need to either get a permit from the city/ district or find a track with a fence you can squeeze into early in the morning or late afternoon. It’s a struggle. It’s due to rich karens dropping lawsuits on schools because they can’t take accountability for not raising their kids right, to not make stupid decisions.
Go figure, they’re supposed to be the “smarter” crowd since they have money, but it just makes them even more entitled because people make decisions off of emotion.
I’ve experienced school tracks in other states still being open nowadays, they don’t know how lucky they have it.
NC chiming in here - almost all MS/HS tracks are locked up with "no-trespassing" signs posted here too. My tax dollars at work, I guess. UNC used to allow people to use their track(s) but not any longer - I hear that not even non-athlete students can use them. At least Duke lets the public use their very nice track during off hours (UNC ought to be ashamed - as a former student there, I certainly am).

South Eugene HS Track is open 24/7 . . . and very accessible. Moved to Venice, FL in 2018 and was surprised to find that the HS track was closed to the public. Now in Northampton, MA where the track is open 24/7. Something about the South??
When I first moved to Eugene in '99, Hayward Field was open to the public 24/7. It was great . . . you could stop by after dinner and walk/jog/run around . . . just like Bowerman wanted it. Then every few years, it got more and more restrictive. Now it's bottled up.

p.s. the Smith College (very good) is also open to the public when not in use by the athletes.
