I saw Tim Hutchings tweet this out that there is a discussion about measuring LJ from the take off spot and not the edge of the board.
The goal is to increase popularity of LJ.
I am not sure that changing the method of measuring will do anything to improve the popularity of LJ. Someone posted that 1/3 of jumps are fouls (no idea) I do not get the sense that that is keeping people from watching.
Then there are practical issues such as having a person watch for the take off point. I have officiated HS meets in LJ and just watching the board requires a decent amount of concentration. Having to look for the take off point and marking it seems really rough.
Trying to see the take off point of a person running at the speeds they do seems like a lot to ask. I also could see where this slows the event as a jumper argues about the take off mark. Then you get into what about reviews and slowing things down more. As it stands now the foul rule seems rarely controversial. The video of the board pretty much seems clear.
As a note, I suspect this would not be adopted in youth/high school.
