I'd only vaguely heard of what this guy has accomplished. I wondered how he did it.

Your mind is weak when you like someone for their charisma. Hitler is so cool!
"I'd only vaguely heard". Oh yeah? Learn more.
They use quotas -- to arrest a certain # of people
So they are rounding up innocent people to meet their targets
Some good results but not perfect... some bad results if you learn more about it
They are saying eventually the innocent folks will have their day in court
Bukele has been amazingly successful in El Salvador. He has locked up tens of thousands of gang members, smashed the gravestones of their departed leaders, and has reduced crime significantly. His approval rating with voters is over 80%.
So of course Biden and American liberals hate him.
It is with a heavy dose of skepticism that I view the statistics that come out of banana republicans run by strongmen.
For his success we should call him Nayib Bekele
El Salvador has 6.6 million people, that's less than the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metro area.
He's certainly been very successful in achieving what he set out to achieve. I actually read a bunch about him last year after hearing about the incredible success he'd had in bringing down crime. He's made himself a dictator to do it, but I do believe that he does truly have the full support of the people. So long as that social contract is upheld, I think things will improve.
However, in my American opinion, El Salvador is kinda selling its soul to the devil. We knew hundreds of years ago that having a benevolent ruler is the best, most effective form of government. But we also knew that a benevolent ruler doesn't last forever. Eventually, they die, and someone else takes their place. They could also be a benevolent ruler, but all it takes is 1 person to be self-interested, and it can all crumble apart. And there's a reason the saying goes "Absolute power corrupts absolutely".
I recently watched a Yale course on Youtube about the American Revolution, and the thing that surprised me the most was learning about what George Washington was known for. It wasn't beating the British, or becoming the first President. It was that he beat the British, marched his army down to Congress, and he resigned from his position, returning to civilian life. I watched it right after watching that new Napoleon movie, and the difference was striking. Washington had absolute power, and he could have made himself King. Instead, not only did he give up his power, but he left it in the hands of a government that he didn't believe in, and to people he didn't know or trust.
For El Salvador's sake, and the world's sake, I hope that Bukele makes his country a better place, and then steps down, restoring the democracy that was there before. If he does that, he'll undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest leaders in history. If not, we'll have to see.
El Salvador arrested like 1% of the entire country in a short time period to accomplish this, this is only popular because El Salvador's murder rate was like triple St. Louis's. Arresting and indefinitely detaining 1 out of every 50 males (probably closer to 1 out of every 20 "fighting age" males) on very weak evidence and rumors would be incredibly unpopular across the US which has a significantly lower murder rate in addition to being unconstitutional/illegal.
The Mayor Brandon Johnson has vowed to get rid of Violent Crime in Chicago using New Methods and Famous Defense Attorney has a plan to get rid of crime, Both are using unusual techniques and have said they will lower crime in the USA as much and probably more than Bukele has, Brandon Johnson says he will do it before his term as Mayor is over, Chicago will be the Safest big city in the World both mentioned the Success bukele has had and have sworn to do better than him.
I think he's greatly changed the country for the better. Let's hope he eventually is like George Washington.
It takes decisive action to change a country that is in the shi** so good for him. There are tradeoffs to everything. Hypothetical speaking, let's say America had the same murder rate as El Salvador did a few years back. If Congress passed a law saying - all men between the age of 15-25 must be taken off the streets - we'll pay you a salary but you can't leave the base. (So basically they are imprisoned by compensated for it). I'd 100% be for it.
The pros of eliminating the violence outweigh the cons.
Well, 3% of the population commits over 50% of murders. Stop and frisk will work.
Bukele is a dictator "lite". His claim to fame is that he threw a bunch of people into jail and claimed he got rid of gang violence. You only have to read behind to headlines to know hundreds of innocent people are in jail and those in jail are not treated well.
He markets himself well.
Stop and frisk was the chief contributor to New York City's success in battling violent crime in the 1990s. Giuliani started it and Bloomberg continued it. No more stop and frisk in NYC since DeBlasio and the results speak for themselves.
His epic speech at CPAC yesterday
Pat Buchanan wrote about this phenomenon years ago:
Why the Authoritarian Right Is Rising
If it was working why stop it.
