Henry would have won four (instead of three) had the 1978 course in Madison, Wisconsin, not been blanketed with snow. The race was on November 20. That previous summer, Henry set world records at four distances. In the cross country race, he had built up a big lead over Alberto Salazar. But because snow obscured the chalk at a key turn, Henry went way off course and got a DNF. So Salazar was the NCAA cross country "champ" that year.
