If I remember right, it’s something inspired by a thing galen rupp used to do to his spikes, it gives you way better heel lock without having to waste weight on adding a plasticy ergonomic curve in the heel like many spikes/trainers do
The hole first appeared in the original Victory spike. The tech at the time allowed them to create a spike without heel counter so they put a hole there instead to show off and saved a little weight.
Bernard Lagat named the flywire-updated Ventulus spikes with a hole in the back the "Matumbo," meaning a delicacy made from a goats butthole in Kenya. True story. Not sure if the Victory or Matumbo came out first, they were developed at the same time,
