He's coming along nicely. Last time he broke 3:36.6 was 2021 (pr 3:33). This is a 2 second drop for him this year from 3:54 in January, and he has only run faster than 3:53.93 in one year, in 2021 when he ran 3:51.60 on June 30 at Stanford (he also ran 1:44.68 800m pr that year). His best mile last year was 3:55. His best previous indoor times were also at BU. So, he looks like he will be close to his lifetime best level this year. It just might not be enough with Nuguse, Hocker, Teare, and Kessler being 3:28-3:31 guys.
I don't believe fantastic indoor performances are solely due to double thresholds. I don't believe fantastic indoor performances are solely due to terrific shoes. I don't believe fantastic indoor performances are solely due to superball track surfaces. I believe these indoor arenas are oxygen juiced.
I've been pleasantly surprised by Engels. For a while he was injured and then seemed so unserious about running that I was worried he was going to continue treating the whole thing like a joke putting up sub-par performances until the end in an effort to avoid looking like he actually cares... but thankfully he seems to have righted the ship and is running some quality races! It'll be a win if he is somewhat competitive on the national stage this summer. He doesn't need to actually make the Oly team (not that I think that that would happen but I would like to see him make the finals at USAs and be in the mix late)

Yes he's back.... Back to being the 4th or 5th best guy in the US. I love Craig but he's just not as talented as A talents in the US like Hocker, Kessler, Nuguse. In lots of other eras, he'd be an Olympian but not in this one.
He's a B+ talent and the US is full of A talents. He's the Dak Prescott of the 1500 for the USA.

I don’t think Craig’s lacking talent he has great form and a 1:44 800m, he just doesn’t seem like he’s developed his threshold to where it needs to be to run 3:29 in the 1500m.
For instance, he’s probably more talented than Narve Nordas or Filip Ingebrigtsen who have both medaled at worlds. The difference is that they’d beat him by ten seconds in a 3k despite having less speed than Engels

Dak Prescott had the highest QB rating this season

There’s a genetic component to developing a threshold, and maybe he is what he is. It’s very unlikely that he is as talented as Nordas.
