I’ve been using Nuun for about a year and like it but am curious if there are better options out there.

Nuun to me is an electrolyte you don’t take during runs but later on in the day after. Nuun, from my understanding, has very little calories so it serves me no purpose. First, you need to figure out how much you sweat and how salty a sweater you are. If you are very sweaty and a salty sweater (like me) I like scratch, precision hydration or gu or precision electrolyte tablets. During my training runs in the summer I am taking over 750 mg of sodium an hour. Nuun would never work for me. I’d bonk badly during runs.
I know people that swear by Liquid I.V.
i don’t know if it’s any better, it’s just a different one. IIRC, it’s about $25 for 16 packs. That seems pricey to me but then again, NUUN is pricey.
If you’re a member of Costco you can get a 30 pack for about $30. They had it awhile ago something like $8 off that price.
Do you need to take in electrolytes during a run? I just salt the water that I drink at home, with a salt blend. I guess if I needed to I could put some in little packets for long runs. Super cheap option.
LMNT for heavy sweaters
No Nuun during runsSlope wrote:

Besides using Nuun, you can use Hydrant - this is an electrolyte containing a mixture of sodium, potassium, magnesium and zinc.

Ain't no way I'd ever even bother with this nonsense.
Drip drop hydration packets are the best I've ever used. It feels like you can feel the effects of a hot run (or hangover) go away the instant you drink it.
Nuun is owned by Nestle. F*** THEM! I stopped using when they got bought.
LMNT is great for before/after hot and humid runs. Skratch for on the run
Liquid iv is alright. It costs a lot, and some of the flavors are really bad.
Pocari Sweat is a popular japanese drink. A little sugar with electrolytes. I think it works.
Fruit juice is not as bad as sports drinks for health. I really think you regulate electrolytes without much trouble unless your diet is garbage. I only feel dehydrated from electrolyte problems if I eat unhealthy food too much
Potassium and sodium are high on my list, but my own personal favorite is chloride. You heard me right! Chloride! Often found in drinking water and beneficial in fighting cavities, Chloride is a vital electrolyte. That's my recommendation.
It has some sugar and sodium to re-hydrate, and that is pretty much all you need.
An even cheaper way would be to add some salt and orange dilute/cordial/squash (can you even get this in North America?) to your water after running.
I also like LMNT.
The salted Huma gels are also great if you also want calories.
Already recommended it in another thread, so I'm risking sounding like a shill here, but I LOVE the Mortal Hydration brand. Especially their Salty Mango and Salty Margarita flavors. Berry flavor is ok, but the salty mango just really hits the spot after a hard, humid, and hilly 16-miler. Also about as cheap as Nuun, and since Gatorade's gotten so dang expensive, not much more than that either.
Regarding Nuun though, their Kona Kola flavor is caffeinated and mild enough for pre-workout use. I use it once or twice a week before longer or harder sessions that I know are going to be on the warm/humid side. No regrets so far, and it's also really not too expensive against other options. Hard to find in-store though so I've resorted to ordering a few tubes of tabs at a time.
Salt Stick Caps (capsules)
Comes in contaminant-free certified version for elite athletes, or a slightly less expensive uncertified version for amateur athletes.
It's a capsule you swallow with your water or carb drink, mainly sodium with the proper ratio of the remaining salts, many of which are completely ignored by some electrolyte products.
Highly recommend for anyone, but especially for anyone that deals with post-run muscle cramping.
Can we talk about how crazy hard this Olympic marathon course is?
