Harvard's Graham Blanks (2023 NCAA XC Champion) and Maia Ramsden (2023 NCAA 1500m Champion) do long threshold work as they prepare to run NCAA qualifiers in ...
Of course, no splits on the tempo outside of him saying what he ran at the end. Incredibly boring video - almost as bad as the 'church of the long run' videos
This is good content and glimpse into the workout of an NCAA champion and the Harvard program as a whole. I am loving these recent videos from all access.
Another very good video by these guys. That's some solid speed work for graham especially off of only 1 min. He'll need it if he's going to win NCAAs in march

There shouldn’t be anything sexy about the workout before a race. Save it for the race

How has living with the perception everything should be catered to your wishes been?

Would you feel the same way about filming an easy long run? “Long runs are workouts”
This is a great workout. Solid threshold workout and than a few 300s to fire up the legs for the race. To quote Lydiard, "train don't strain". Which is what I attribute to the better times from threshold training. Doing race pace stuff from quarter repeats at mile pace to 3k/5k race pace intervals is playing with fire. It's so easy to over do it at those paces. While they are necessary to peak. You don't need to be doing 5x1k vo2 max workouts for every workout during indoor or outdoor season. I applaud his coach for this workout when the temptation to do something harder is right there. More runners and coaches should take notes.
It's amazing that they can recruit such good runners with that kind of ugly training grounds. What else do they have going for them? You'd think that with a $50-60 billion endowment they could fix the potholes and cracks in their campus roads.
Ramsden was doing 300s at 800 pace, which is impressive after a 30 minute threshold. She has excellent speed for a 1500m runner at the NCAA level. She was doing 45 and 44s there at the end, not much back of Blanks, although he was doing them on short rest, 1 minute. You can see why she is a miler and he is an NCAA xc champ and former D1 5k record holder. Her relative speed for the event/gender is greater than his, even if he was holding back a bit (42/43/42/41.9) and running with others only once or twice. I think he'll add the 3k record if he tries for it this weekend before Nico lowers it to 7:30.
3x12 min threshold (3 min rest) (20 min recovery) 4x300m (1 min rest)
Did that same workout earlier this week too, just a lot slower. It's cool to see the elites doing monster workouts but also reassuring sometimes to see them do things that aren't too crazy.
Always thought that threshold intervals were such a nice way to get in good quality stimulus without being too stressful, seems many of the best agree.
