I watched the interview with her and her dad. I noticed when asked about her training, her dad kept interrupting and saying most of her time is spent doing homework. This right here proves that Dathan is a very very very EXCELLENT father.
You see, Dothan understands that no matter how good she is, she is still a student athlete. Think about that word. Student. Athlete. Student comes first. Athlete comes second. I coach college kids here in San antonio, and I will tell you that some of us coaches still believe in the student athlete concept of putting grades first, not the athlete student concept of breezing through school or having someone else do your work.
Even though I was a Dathan fan when he was running and I preferred; his behavior and approaching with Addison proves that he is an OUTSTANDING father.
A few weeks back, I went out west to NXN SOUTHWEST in Mesa to do some recruiting. If all of you recall, at that meet Addison did not win. The winner was the 8th grade girl from albuquerque. Then, 2 weeks later, Addison beat the 8th grader at nationals. I think this speaks volumes. You know what it says? It says that Dothan sat down with his daughter and taught her about proper peaking techniques. He told her exactly when to peak, and that time is at nationals, not regionals.
Please also consider the 8th grader is much younger than Addison. That also speaks volumes. That's all I will say in this thread. Thank you for reading.

Great little interview! She seems like an absolute stud in the making.
Always boggles my mind to see such success and maturity from HS sophomores. At that age I had braces and light acne, was still losing baby fat, spoke with rushed and sometimes awkward speech, and was fighting for 6th-7th spot on our varsity team. Props to Addy, keep up the great work!
There is a really good interview of Padraig Harrington at the PNC Championship talking about parents and youth sports. Padraig is as fiery a competitor as you will find in all of golf. But in the interview he says that kids will never excel at a high level in sports unless the parents first make sure it is fun for them. Only when the kid has fun doing it will they then be able to dig in to the training and dedication required to compete at a high level. I think that is what I see with Dathan and his daughter. He seems to understand that she needs to fall in love with the sport and keeps it all in perspective. Also, good on her for having a ton of talent but also understanding the importance of proper pacing at a young age.

Thank you for this, I remember some nasty Tuohy comments when she was in HS.
I'm excited to see what Addy can do. How crazy is it that one of the greatest US talents ever is coaching the best team in the country, and has a kid that won NXN as a sophomore. It'd be like if AlSal married a fast runner and then had Rupp (GalSal?) as a kid. It's like NOP on steroids (pun intended but also if OAC is dirty, I'm done).
Like, if someone asked you to hypothetically build the perfect runner, you'd take 2 great runners, get them to have a kid, let that kid choose running instead of being forced to, have them training at altitude from a young age, surround them with the best pro group in the world, who they see on a consistent basis because their parent is the head coach. I don't want to put undue pressure on her, I'm just saying if she wants it, it's hers to take.

Alberto Salazar DID marry a fast runner. Molly Morton was a high school record holder.
