Fractured her foot during Chicago. Have not seen her at all running in the Boulder area. Social Media silent. Anyone have any info on how her recovery/training is going?
Actually Emma Bates made poor decisions during Chicago that put her in this position. She should have not finished Chicago. She has posted in her own words that she felt the injury getting worse throughout the race and repeatedly questioned how much damage she was doing by continuing and not dropping. She questioned if finishing would jeopardize her chance at the Olympics. Yet she kept running and no surprise- more than likely did ruin that chance. She is a mature, experienced athlete. Maybe you could say Joe's training started the injury but Emma put herself in the position she is in now.
She did post on her IG in dec 12th that she was up to running 60 minutes on the ground.. but then suffered a setback and was suffering from posterior tibial tendinitis/shin splints and was back to grinding away on the bike.
no update since then… I was really rooting for her to make the team.
I have to say I’m really disappointed about this. I remember listening to a podcast a few months back where she said she doesn’t really stretch or warmup or get treatment from physical therapists etc..I wondered if one day this would catch up to her. Just didn’t think it would be before the trials.
I can understand toeing the line at Chicago in denial about what was going on, but the second she stepped wrong during the race and the pain worsened she should have stepped off the course.
Fingers crossed for her but I don’t see how she is able to make the team after this.

I have said this since October 8th. I knew that day she was done for this year.

She didn't break her foot (so all the later snark in this thread on that front is misplaced), and she's still injured. Plantar fascia injuries take a long time to heal (mine was a solid four months of constant rehab, and I wasn't even in the same universe of performance as Bates), and her timing was a downer.
A gradual build up to 2028 Olympic team would be best. If Emma Bates doesn't ride too hard in the saddle, she may avoid aging out before then. If building up gradually for 2028 Olympics, no Marathon until 2027.
