Following the recent Paul Cummings thread bump, I was reading about his career when I came upon the story of another famed runner who died around the same time as Paul in 2001. That would be Jacques "Jacky" Boxberger who made the '68 1500m final at the age of 19, and also participated in the '72, '76 and '84 Olympics. He checked out in one of the most gruesome ways imaginable. I'll let Wikipedia explain:
In 2001, Boxberger was on vacation with his family in Kenya. While he was trying to film an elephant on a safari, the animal picked up Boxberger with its trunk, threw him against a tree and trampled him to death.
