Why is there a separate world record for park run? It should just get lumped in with the road records. Props to Ciara and all that, but even she would tell you this isn’t that big of a deal.
I find it really, really small time that pro athletes are turning up to parkrun and making a thing out of the 'world record'. It's pretty cringe worthy.
Parkrun is a weekly celebration of inclusive running, from couch to 5k graduates to elites. It's fantastic and inspiring to see elites and sub elites at your event, and even better when they run fast. No elite is making a thing of running a WR, the WR is a by-product. They are running to get a Sat morn session in which has the feel of an organised race yet is low key. Parkrun has a big feel good factor regardless of where you finish. Nothing cringe about it at all, especially not here in UK or to other parkrunners.
The free run (or was it $.50) at Fresh Pond in Cambridge MA was like that back in the 1970s. 2.5 mi and 5 mi runs. You might be running a 13 minute 2.5 miler or a 27 minute 5 miler and be getting dropped by Craig Virgin or Lynn Jennings or Dan Dillon

Really, really disagree. Ae you a parkrunner?

I agree. I also don't think there's anything wrong with the concept of parkrun world record. Maybe being a regular at them has influenced my perspective, but most people know that the courses all vary but it's really cool to be able to see worldwide statistics (e.g. fastest overall time, highest age grade, etc.). parkrun is kind of it's own thing, separate from normal road races. I see the parkrun "world record" as it's own standalone metric, it's of interest to see a noteworthy performance, but nobody in their right mind thinks it means anything on the world scale or professional running.

It was free on Saturdays but 50 cents for the summer Thursday evening series. That money went to pay for the watermelon. Saturdays were hosted by the celebrate Fred Brown; Thursdays hosted by the Cambridge Sports Union.

It isn't its own thing; it's essentially just a really sh*t road race.
Giving it a different name doesn't change the conditions under which a performance is run.

Park Runs are, for the most part, cross country courses. At least by American XC standards.

Can't call it a course record even. Or for that matter even an event record? The only thing binding these runs is they all are called parkrun. Does every turkey trot have a world record?
