Instead of complaining about the absurd amount of spots that are withheld for XC quota athletes, Katie Izzo has gone to Spain and is very likely to pick up a spot after a 2nd in Austin and a 3rd in Spain. Well done to Katie and her advisors for forging a lesser known path.
I’m not sure who could surprise, as some, like Infeld are getting up there in age. Kurgat?
I think a huge wild card, if she went all-in over the next 6 months increasing training volume, would be Valby. If she tried, she could probably be as likely to make the team, as DNS.

Not having further insight, Valby is just as big, if not bigger, of wild-card, in the steeplechase.
The time is short, and running either standard before the trials would be very challenging.
Although it will be the most competitive team to make, Valby’s best shot is prob the 5k.

What makes you think Valby will ever try the steeplechase? She can barely stay healthy only running 3 days per week.
She would get injured immediately in the steeplechase. She should get in no problem via world ranking.
Though it should be mentioned that the world ranking process is so flawed. Right now Tuohy is ranked #35 in the 5k while Valby is ranked #61. Whittni Morgan is 26th despite having only run 15:02.

well Megan Keith is 70....if they post a couple more fast times they will move up. Tuohy's 8:35 is by far the highest rate race she has in her ranking, higher than even Valby's 14:56.

How can that be when she isn’t even in the “Road to Paris” listing:
She needs a third race, but a 2nd and a 3rd place at a GL cross country races is a very good base and should be more than good enough to include her in the Top 8 XC ranking coupled with another strong result (a win at the Cat A race in Zaragoza this saturday might already be enough e. g.) Still needs to perform at the trials obviously, as there surely will be enough Americans to either hit the standard or be eligible via the world rankings.

Valby has publicly suggested the ‘steeple season’ since October (at least.)
I don’t buy the “barely stay healthy”. I think she trains the way she does because she’s gotten big success from it.
The steeplechase carries injury risk for any participant; it’s the nature of the event.
Since Valby is running for the University of Florida this spring, I think the 10k is off the table this go round.
The steeple standard is 9:23. I think Markezich will run 9:07.
Valby’s hypothetical Road to Paris in the Steeple would include a sub-8:35 at the BU Valentine.

Brilliant approach!
The trials race never goes fast enough for standard, so she will be battling with a very small pool for a top-three spot among women with 'standard' beforehand (time or rankings).
Literally there might be three or less women actually competing for Olympic berths.

for sure-goes without saying that the trials finals are tactical and to already have an Olympic standard in your pocket---not even accounting for bad weather--that 10k that Sisson won in 2021 was insane with that heat dome!
