For context, I am a 19-year-old male collegiate runner, and after a particularly rough week of training (could barely finish my workout, and had symptoms of lightheadedness, fatigue, chest pain that worsened with exercise, and some minor heart palpitations at night) I decided to get my iron tested. While my hemoglobin (and another metric I forget the name of) were normal, mt ferritin was on the low side (20).
I asked both my doctor and my coach about how to supplement for this and I got two very conflicting answers. My coach recommended I take two of the Vitron-C pills that I had on hand (meaning 130mg of elemental iron/day) for a few weeks before tapering off gradually until I'm taking one pill 2-3 times/week as maintenance. My doctor, however, said that my ferritin wasn't that bad and because my hemoglobin levels were normal, I shouldn't supplement at all, and if I were to even consider doing so, I should only take 25mg of liquid iron every other day. She also cited that taking too much iron could cause other problems, including heart issues.
So, predictably, I went with my coach's advice, and within two weeks was starting to feel better. But a couple times in the past few days I had some minor heart palpitations/racing heart feeling, which scared me into thinking that I've been overdoing it with the iron, thinking back to my doctor's warning. I am just wondering, for those who may have experience with this issue, how I should go about supplementing going forward? Should I keep the 130mg/day or taper off, and are there certain types of iron that may be easier on the body than others? Anything else I should know? Thanks.
