First: some, many... athletes are doping. I dunno, that's not my point here.
Second: this only applies to athletes living at altitude.
You can fail a drug test for two main reasons.
#1 They find the banned substance in your blood/urine tests.
#2 Your tests show out of range, abnormal, values.
Point is: a genetic freak living at altitude should not have a high enough red cell count that, if using EPO (even if not showing at tests)...
...is at risk of falling the test due to range values?
Another way of framing it: a genetically gifted, 0.01% outlier African, should not be naturally close to the red flag of red blood cell values?
