I am a cross country coach at a Title I school with a small team. One of my runners this year is very talented; he currently runs 70+ mile weeks and has placed at state the past two years. I'm wondering how I can modify my existing training plan (which tends to be around 45 mile weeks, though it of course varies based on week and individual runners) to fit the needs of this student. I'd like to incorporate two practices a day some days (the norm when I ran xc, but not at my current school), incorporate longer long runs, and do some pool and weight training (I know that research suggests heavy lifting isn't ideal for boy's xc runners--but overall strength/body conditioning is). Any tips on where I can start? I am open to reading, listening to podcasts, etc. Most of the kids in my school live in poverty and don't always have great opportunities when it comes to sports. I'm confident as a coach, but not at this level. I want to do justice to the training this student has put in while also keeping him safe so he can continue running throughout high school and into college. Thank you in advance!
