Maybe not 26 years, but I see it standing for a while. It's a rarely contested event and took a generational talent with a really good season to beat it. I say a decade or so (assuming Jakob himself doesn't break it).

Previous record stood for 26 years, could the same happen again?
I think Jakob himself could've run 2 seconds faster with more aggressive / even pacing given how strong his finish was. Katir, Kejelcha and Girma could run 7:56 with a similarly good setup imo, but not sure about any other contenders

Agreed. Plus the temperature was in the mid 80's.
But only 33% humidity, so minimal effect and his performance certainly supports that conclusion. He's better than the guys the previous poster listed at both 1500m and 5000m.
Frankly I don’t like this form of question because there’s no way of predicting when the next freak talent will come along. He could be just around the corner.
It’s a great record, and the fact that the distance is practically never raced at the international level should help its longevity.

Until someone decides like JI that it is a lot weaker than the 1500/3000/5000 and convinces some meet director to add it to the program.
but yes we are always like 3 years away from some super talent showing up
It has a chance to last a while, not only because it’s a rarely run distance, but also because 7:54 is insanely strong (7:19 3k equivalent). El G and Komen might have been able to match it but I don’t see anyone else coming within 2 seconds. I doubt Jakob will ever try to improve his mark.
In middle distance and distance events the new shoes and spikes have ushered in an era of new times. I very much respect 7:54 in any era, but I don't know that I (or lots of people) totally understand what it would represent in the old shoes.
So, my thought is that it's (unfortunately) a rarely contested event, so breaking the record (vs. running a faster 3 km. equivalent) could take some time, but there may be some new supershoe wearers out there that could take a shot in the near future. It's also possible, though, that Jakob's AT work has been so ingrained for so long that it's like a superpower unless someone has focused on it as much! In conclusion, I don't know.
until Jakob breaks 3:26, 7:20 or 12:35, you know what this conversation is worth. Don't deny it.
If Komen had been a bit more serious about his career, the 2-mile world best would already be under 7:54. He'd probably have even got that 3000 under 7:20.
Prime Bekele would also have beat 7:54 if it had been an important goal for him.

Bekele? Jakob is significantly faster than Bekele at both 1500m and 2000m. If their ultimate potentials were graphed, they would intersect at about 5000m.
T&F News uses 1.08 to convert from 2-miles to 3000m. Using that ratio, Jakob’s 2-mile comes to 7:19. Jakob also broke Komen’s 2-mile WR record by 4.5 seconds.
