In my mind, there should be 1 AOY - like the MVP award - per gender. You can still have field athletes of the year, sprint athlete of the year - just like you have CY Young, Gold Gloves, etc.

I like their 6 different categories. Hard to compare across categories.
As a WA North American Regional (Pacific Northwest) 50+ Clydesdale Middle Distance AOY, I approve of more awards!

This is woke, that is woke, everything that unhinges you is woke.
A female & male AOY in the track events, field events, & multis. That equals six.
Really, too many whiners here that perseverate on stupid sh!t and get triggered too easily.
Too many? Theoretically there should be at least that many, one for each broadly-defined event type.

This is how it should be but the "out of stadia" category is sort of stupid. The marathon should be in the "track" category.
Track, field, multi events - simple.
Too funny that idiots are really upset about this.
I like it.
The problem was that if you ran the second fastest 100m of all time and won WC gold in the 200 (for example), you actually did more (athletically speaking) than the person who set a triple jump WR and went undefeated all yer.
This is due to the level of competition and depth in the two events. There are billions of people who have "tried to run fast" and only a few who have done hammer throw or pole vault... so even if you have the PERFECT season in a niche event, the sprinter or middle distance runner in the 1500m/5000m (like Faith) is doing the harder double. This is why Mondo doesn't win it every year despite the fact that he gets the WR every year.
That is why it is good to have at least a couple categories - track, field, marathon. Sounds good to me.
