When I was in high school I actually looked up to Pre for this mentality. Now that I'm in my 30s and no longer running competitively, I look at it as naïve, immature, and stupid.
What was the fascination/obsession with running all out from the opening lap in every race?
Even in a sit and kick race, you're still tired at the end. You technically did give the race everything you had, just in a different way than if you ran fast from the opening lap. Sit and kick, and fast-from-jump are two different racing styles, but you're still running as fast as you can at the end of each one.
I just find it to be silly. Then again, he was a very young man when he expressed these sentiments, and could have changed his tune as he grew older/more mature.
