I know there is another thread on this but I am sort of breaking our own rule of 1 thread per topic as I want to make sure everyone reads this (I've closed the other thread to new posts).
Let's say the Trials results is this.
1st. Rupp 2:08:45, 2nd Panning 2:09:00, 3rd Clayton Young 2:09:15 4th Fauble 2:09:16. Mantz is a DNF. Hell, I think he could be a DNS.
Rupp and Panning are in at the Trials.
On April 30th, the US gets its third spot as we will have a 3rd in the top 80 (Fauble) but that spot doesn't go to Young even though he was top 3 at the Trials or Fauble. It would go to Mantz as his world ranking is higher than Clayton Youngs.
Here's a 2nd scenario.
Trials results
1. Fauble 2:10:45. Mantz 2:11:15 3. Young 2:11:29
Rupp skips Trials (or is a DNF) and goes to London and runs 2:08:11.
On April 30th, the US gets a third spot but that spot goes to Rupp over Young as Rupp world ranking is higher. USATF's selection criteria stupidly says you can't "chase times" but it doesn't say you can't race a marathon after the Trials. So wouldn't Rupp's London performance count?
Is there any flaw to my thinking? I don't think so. I think the way it's written now my conclusions are valid.
If you didn't read our article on this fiasco, it is here:
PS. What's the conclusion? They need to say they will honor the order of finish at the Trials and they will go with 3rd if he's eligible, if not then 4th, etc.
