A guy named Joe Tribble just won his 30th boy state title for Westminster schools in Georgia. That’s more than Joe Newton. I think it depends on what you value.
It's hard for me to be impressed when NXN was so weak this year. The top runner from the championship winning team only ran 15:40.
I think the better indication of a great high school coach is how do your athletes perform in college and beyond.
However I will say that Soles should get a shot at college coaching before Brosnan gets a second chance.
Yes it was so weak that the kid from 2nd place last year was 13th
Oh c’mon, there’s a story there. I don’t know what it is yet, but he didn’t start out over 100 spots if he is healthy, doesn’t trip, and wants to win. One of those must have misfired.

There's also more to the story there than "the top runner from the championship winning team only ran 15:40" in determining how strong/impressive the field/race was.

The best indication of a great coach is how the runners do when he is NOT coaching them? You aren't too bright, are you?
If all you care about is how your athletes perform in High School, and you don’t care that NONE have similar or greater success after you’ve burnt them out with overtraining and pressure, then sure, you could see things through a short-sighted lens of “I got mine. I’m a great coach. Who cares about the future of those kids; it’s all about now and my career”.

Hmm, lets see. He threw the last place he coached at under the bus because they did not share his political beliefs. Yeah, I'm sure the athletic departments are lining up.

lol Georgia. Unless you're talking about football, nope. Ol Joe couldn't crack the top 10 in a distance state.

What is this "burnt out" garbage? He brings the best out of his athletes. They get closer to their ceiling than most in HS, not burnt out. Look at the athletes on his team. Just explore what they were running before he showed up. Definitely not D1 talent.
NCAA is next level. You have to be fit AND an athletic freaky talent. Talent is rare and you can't just take any above average varsity runner and turn them into a sub 28:00 10K D1 athlete.
Won NXN in 2015 at Great Oak and podiumed multiple times.
Took some random team from Utah from 9th at their state meet to National Champions in just 3 years.
Nope....that would be 2 years. Last year Herriman was 3rd and that was his first XC season. Great Oak was 6th last year so does anyone wanna say he had his fingerprints on 2 top 10 teams last year at NXN? And no one can argue Great Oak is the same program that they were when he was there. The Doug Soles effect is real.

Carson Smith (Great Oak 2022 alum) was coached by Doug Soles the first 3 years of HS and by Draughon senior year.
People pointing out that this was an extremely weak year are correct. His team had a huge drop off after their #5, and that’s with a very mediocre result from the scoring runners.
I don't think GEORGIA is a strong running state, so it's not the same as winning Illinois state championships. Plus, it doesn't have the same population. I was looking at some of their times and they aren't a particularly deep state as far as competition.
